Accelerating Access to Formal Housing in Brazil

As many as 1 billion people in the world to do not have access to formal housing. As in many countries, this problem is quite extreme in Brazil.

Brazil´s economy is the 9th largest in the world. It´s roughly the same size as Canada. GDP per capita US$ 17,000. This is not a poor country by any means. It is estimated that 25% of Brazil´s population lives in some kind of informal housing that does not have access to all public services such as basic sanitation and the resident does not have title to the property.

Resources are limited by definition, and I feel particularly frustrated by the inefficiency of the application of resources spent on trying to resolve other social problems that are directly related to this one. It´s my personal opinion that we cannot tackle the problems of open sewers and security, for example, without first seeking to resolve the problem of lack of access to formal housing. I believe it is physically impossible due to the layout of the communities.

This is an extremely complex problem. So my objective here is not to try to solve it but rather to create a framework by which a formal plan can be authored, vetted and implemented. This plan would begin with the development of a series of communications tools including website, social media and content such as videos, photos and publications.
